Organic SEO Audit: Backlinks

Updated: Dec 8, 2024

Creating backlinks is considered one of the key processes for SEO and influences the placement of a site in a search engine's results and indexing. One can consider backlinks as votes of confidence in the web world. A backlink analysis serves to assess your site's position in the present and assess the possibilities for its improvement.

Here's how to conduct a thorough backlink audit:

  • Use a backlink analysis tool: To begin with, type in your homepage URL into the backlink analysis tool, eg- Ubersuggest, Moz, and SEMrush. These tools will give you detailed reports of the number of backlinks and other factors in addition to offering insights into your link profile.

  • Export and organize data: Most of the tools provide download options in the form of reports with highly detailed displays helpful in analysing changes within time and patterns of the backlink profiles.

  • Review referring domains and domain authority: Study different websites that are connected to your website. A few genuine links drawn from reputable industry-based websites are deemed to have more value than a significantly large number of links from other unrelated or low-quality based sites.

  • Domain authority (DA): Find out the DA score of your site which gives an idea of your backlink profile. An index ranging from one to one hundred indicates how well a particular site might rank in a given search. The primary efforts should be given to relationship building and link acquisition with websites that have DA scores similar or slightly higher to your site for natural link growth.

  • Identify toxic links: Anchor text analysis: Examine the text used to link to your webpages. A natural backlink profile typically includes a mix of:

    • Brand-related anchor text

    • Generic phrases ("click here," "learn more")

    • Relevant contextual phrases

    • Naked URLs

  • Source evaluation: Verify that your backlinks come from reputable sites within your industry or related fields. Watch out for red flags such as:

    • Sites with no original content

    • Links from unrelated industries

    • Links from sites with suspicious traffic patterns

    • Multiple links from sites with identical layouts

  • Google Disavow tool: Use Google's Disavow Tool to inform Google which toxic links to ignore.

Before disavowing links:

  • Document all toxic links identified

  • Attempt to contact site owners for link removal

  • Create a properly formatted disavow file

  • Monitor the impact on your site's performance after submission

Backlinks should be monitored often if you want to enhance your search engine rankings and overall performance. Have a quarterly cycle for backlink auditing and establish daily/monthly checks for new backlinks. It is a proper combination to keep the ‘flow of link quality’ without being stuck too much on it.

Keyword rank tracking and backlink analysis should be basic activities that you conduct when doing your regular SEO check. These best practices assist you in the process of overseeing website effectiveness as well as SEO techniques. It is pertinent that one should use tools that can give automated notification of new backlinks so that one is able to correct any irregularities/anomalies before they affect the ranking of the website.
